I received an email today from a gentleman going by the name of Stan Nonin. Here is the email message:

Quote:
Dear owner of simpsons-trivia.net,

I noticeded that your domain "simpsons-trivia.net" expires in a few weeks, which means that it is going to be publicly available soon. I'd like to buy this domain name before it expires.

I assume that you are not interested in keeping it for yourself.

I can buy this domain for $60 plus any renewal related expenses. What do you think?

Stan Nonin,
stan.m.nonin@blueridgehosting.com

After googling the name: "Stan Nonin" I discovered that i am not the only one who has had an offer from this guy. He leaves a trail of confused domain owners and even blog owners behind him.

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... arch&meta=

Who is this masked "buyer" of domains? Needless to say, I'm not going dignify his offer with a response. I am closing simpsons-trivia.net's quiz shortly and will most likely just redirect from there to here.

If anyone has any answers to what this guy is actually up to i'd like to know it. I've been scratching my head all day about it. I can only guess that he scams you out of your domain or your bank details during the transaction process. maybe he's legit? but is it even possible to buy someones blog? i wouldnt think so.

Please post if you have any info on this .. it's just gonna bug me if i dont find out :?

It seems you have to be really careful these days when you do just about anything online. There are just SO many scammers and theives out there. I think I will dedicate this thread to alerting people of all these types of emails that I come across in the hope that someone will read them and not become a victim.

I got a couple of emails today from different sources that were both involved in a nice little scam known as "domain tasting". Well, at least it could be that. The point is that what these guys are doing is not illegal, but just wrong. IMO its fraud, but you judge for yourself. I have been working on the side on a new website about Science Fiction MMORPGs. I already owned the .NET of this domain: www.scifimmorpg.net, and I noticed recently that the .COM address was becoming available soon. So I had been keeping a close eye on it. But it seemed someone else got it first. Disappointed, I moved on and decided to forget about scifimmorpg.com, and be happy owning just the .NET. Then today these 2 emails came in:

Email 1:
Quote:
Our company specializes in acquiring expired domain names to help individuals and businesses protect their brand online.

The domain name SCIFIMMORPG.COM expired recently and we were able to secure it.

We noticed that you own SCIFIMMORPG.NET and felt that you may be interested in acquiring the .COM version of your existing domain name.

It is available for a one-time fee of only $99.00 USD.

To purchase or learn more, please visit http://zipdomains.com/buy.php?domain=scifimmorpg.com

Email 2:

We are selling the domain name scifimmorpg.com. Since you own scifimmorpg.net if you would also like the more desirable .com we are making it available. The cost is $99.97. That includes a year of registration and transfer of ownership to you. To purchase or to learn more go to:

http://www.dcinchq.com/checkout.php?dom ... mmorpg.com

If you pass on this opportunity someone else could purchase this domain and it may not be available again.

For questions contact us or go to:

If you are not interested there is no need to respond. We will not contact you again regarding this domain.

I was curious so i checked to see if the domain was available at my regular domain supplier. To my suprise it was available!! So I grabbed it for my usual price of $9.99. I have NO intentions of letting this baby go now lol.

Bottom line i guess is dont believe anything you hear from unknown ppls on your email. Check it out for yourself.. Google it! Google has all the answers. Be careful guys.. laterz

8-)

amazing the things ppl do and the sheer number of scams out there now days, ive found ppl can be malicious just for there own pleasure as well a cpl years ago i was chatting to friends in yahoo and got a pm from someone unluckily for me the name was the same as someone i knew but hadnt spoken to for a while so i got all excited, they told me to check out there profile and when i did my yahoo acct got nabbed silly thing was tho in hindsight when u check ppls profiles it doesnt ask for ur username and pass heh things ppl do when they are drunk  .

the only part that really chafes me about it nowadays is that that email address was the one i used for my original AO acct and bcos i cant remember the pass or username for it i cant get them back no great loss tho it was on rk2 but dammit i had a few mill a RL friend had given me on that acct bfore he quit lol

woah dude thats quite a story :O

how exactly did he get your yahoo account? did he put up a fake profile page or something? It would be great to get some more info on what this guy did, in the hope that others (myself included) can avoid anything like that happening.

As you said, it really is quite remarkable the lengths that some of these characters go to to try and steal your money/information. Imagine what they could achieve if they used their powers for good instead of evil ...

yeh quite astounding the lengths ppl go to almost like a full time job tbh.

basically what happened was i got a pm and they said to check out there profile, ofc being some1 i thought i knew figured why not, maybe they want to show me something, and iirc pasted a link (should have been suspicious right there, could be wrong i might have just clicked view profile it was about 5-6 yrs ago now).

so i looked at the profile thing and it said something like "this profile is restricted to 18+ or over plz verify ur age by entering ur username and password" looked legit had all the yahoo symbols and themes and such so i thought ok fair enuff put in my username and pass and a cpl mins later i get a pm from a guy called "anger management" who i had burnt with sum rather spicy vitriolic words (totally deserved mind you) as well as using booting programs for yahoo to kick him (cos u just get sick of being insulted after awhile) that basically said "haha ive just hacked ur acct" so im thinking wtf?

went to fire up my profile\acct page and it said the pass was wrong :\ as soon as i dced from chat that was it my acct was gone heh. tried to recover the pass and all that stuff but he had changed my acct details so my d.o.b. and address didnt match nemore.

so basically that was my first never use ur password for anything at all lesson lol after a bit of research i found out that its a program that ppl can dl that pretty much redirects a profile to this thing that records ur username\password and sends it to their email :\

lesson learnt heh wasnt long before that i met ren on yahoo so i just let it go hadnt thought about it for ages till i saw ur post heh.

wow i'm blown away dude. Guess you learnt your lesson eh? and hopefully others will too after reading this. I like to have reminders like this every now and then so i dont get too complacent about security online. Thanks for the story mate :)
