South Park is an animated television series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and is well known for its off beat humour and satire while covering a wide range of topics generally associated with current events. The series is set in the small town of South Park, Colorado and it revolves around the adventures of four boys; Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny. The creators of South Park, Matt and Trey, met at the University of Colorado in a film class and created a short animation called Jesus vs. Frosty in 1992 (conflicting info on the year, some say it was 1991). In 1995 FOX executive, Brian Garden, commissioned Matt and Trey to create a second short film for his personal use of sending to his friends as a video Christmas card. This was called Jesus vs. Santa and featured a martial arts battle and truce between Jesus and Santa Claus over the true meaning of Christmas. This video was then later featured in the episode “A Very Crappy Christmas” and led to the debut series which went to air on August 13 1997. New South Park episodes air on Wednesday and the production for these episodes don’t start until the Thursday before. This method takes the South Park production team 100-120 hours each to complete the next episode but allows enough flexibility for the topic of the episode to reflect any current issues. For example; the season 12 episode “About Last Night” aired just 23 hours after Barack Obama was declared winner of the US 2008 presidential election. In March 2008, Matt and Trey made all of the South Park episodes available for legal streaming on the South Park studios webstite. This proved to be extremely popular with there being more than 55 million streams before the end of the year 2008. So far the South Park team have produced 12 seasons of the popular animated series, with season 13 to premiere in March 2009. Matt and Trey are contracted to produce new episodes all the way through to and including 2011, so there is still so much more South Park to come. |
