Hi all,

We have been thinking about introducing a new scoring system which will take into consideration the fact that some players have done a lot of quizzes, and so making it difficult to score a high average. Meanwhile, others come in and do a couple of quizzes, and sit at the top of the averages table for ever.

Can anyone come up with a suggestion for a formula which will take into account your average score but is also effected by how many quizzes you've done?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Cap!

I'm In. Can't wait to see what you come up with regarding the new scoring system. The forum is impressive.

Ugh.. where's a mathematician when you need one? I can't even spell it ..

(I had to drop it into word and spell-check it - and I was way off >.<)

Anyway this is doing my head in, I'm kind of going round in circles. If only I could just get a formula worked out.. even a rough one to get me started.

thinking thinking ...

:geek: <--- not

8-) yeah thats better :P

Actually I like what you suggested TBK, it got me thinking about things I hadnt considered, like encouraging players to take part in all the quizzes each week, or at least more than 1. Only prob is that if someone took a long break and came back they would not be able to make it back on the high score board.. I think.

OK got it. Just had a brainstorming session with my partner (the lovely LadyWoO) and we think we should go another way...

Rather than focusing on the scores themselves, we could have badges that players can earn by doing things like:

- scoring 20/20 in all 5 quizzes (all in one week)
- scoring an average of 15 or higher in all 5 quizzes (all in one week)
- getting 20/20 in 1 quiz
- getting 20/20 in 2 quizzes (both in one week)
- getting 20/20 in 2 quizzes (in any 2 weeks)
- same as above 3 but for 3, 4 and 5 quizzes
- reaching a total of 100 points (and for 500, 1000, 5000, 10000 etc.)
- earning any 5 badges

... and so on ... I've got a million of em lol, the more you think about it, the more start coming to mind. We may as well have a badge suggestions thread too.. we need to have heaps of them.

These badges would display in your profile, and perhaps we could have different badges earners' records tables as well. I would still like to display all the results we have always had, but in a more condensed format, and in more detail.

Further on down the track.. I'd like to have the badges unlock things for the players.. not sure what yet, but it would be something to do with the avatars or the profile page. Something like that.

Oh and further to what we were orginally talking about, how about a consistancy rating, which is calculated like this:

take the best 3 scores each week for the last 4 weeks.. this gives you a total of 240 points. Your consistancy rating would be:

Code:
(total of top 3 scores each week for last 4 weeks) / 240) * 100

... so basically a percentage. If you stop doing quizzes or dont do enough, it goes down. If you do lots and score well consistantly, it goes up. Of course we can have badges that apply to achieving certain CR's as well, but this would essentially be your main score. We should call it something else though.. any ideas?

Wow, you made it a lot more complex than I expected. I'm worried that all this focus on perfect scores would make people prone to cheating. I, for example, dont read the questions and then go watch the episodes to find the answers. Thats why I don't often get a perfect score. I'm a big enough fan to know most of the answers off the top of my head. (I gotta stop doing that odd one out quiz though! It's ruining my average. lol) I DO like the badges idea though. I'll have to think a while on what else to call the CR's.

Thats a lovely picture of LadyWoO by the way. Any relation to the Testaberger family of South Park, Colorado, USA? If so, I'd be really careful about pissing her off! LOL.

No relation.. but yeah.. be careful lol

You hit the nail on the head with the "odd one out" quiz, hopefully the new system will reward you for at least attempting all the quizzes instead of penalizing you.

Yes, the odd one out is a tough one but it is good to see that a few people have made it a part of their regular quiz rotation.

...and yeah ditto on what Cap said :P
hehe, Cap really did look at me like that when I dyed my hair purple

BTW...it is good to have you here.
We have seen many regular quiz names over time and it is good to finally get to meet and greet some of them...in a virtual'ish kind of way :)

Thank you. It's good to be here. Sorry, I thought I saw a slight family resemblance with Wendy. Its nice to get to meet you too. I can't believe you died your hair purple! Australians!! Nobody in the US would ever do something like that. ;) Noooooo. LMAO. I had the great priviledge of being able to visit Australia once. I spent 7 days in Perth in September of 1985 when I was with the US Marine Corps. I got to visit a lot of countries and nowhere else did I feel more welcome than in Australia. The people I met were just wonderful. :D I try to do as many quizzes as I think I can do somewhat well. I don't watch the Simpsons so I usually skip that one. Did you get the questions I sent. Let me know if they are acceptable for use or if I need to do better. I can get 3-5 questions usually from watching an episode.

ROFL yeah Americans are so... normal ;) .. nah but seriously we have made some great friends from the US over the years in our online shannanigans. Hopefully some day I will get to go over there, I was just saying to Woo the other day that I'd love to drive around the US for a year, just for something different, and run the websites from a laptop ^^. Unfortunately we arent making enough from it to be planning extravigent holidays just yet hehe. But if we do I'll look you up and come have a beer with you ;)

Thanks for the questions, they have been added to the database :D I thought they were very good. Some of those will really make you think. I liked the one about the "school for the hard of hearing"... that was such a brilliant send-up. Im a bit of a fan of the whole Belushi-Aykroyd-Radner-Chase-Morris etc.. era of SNL. I actually played Elwood in a Blues Brothers tribute band for a few years in my younger days. Maan that was a lot of fun :D

Anyway, I digress... back to work, and thanks again for the questions :D

PS: I can bring out the Testaberger in anyone.. LadyWoo especially
